We Have Great Friends!

We just received some great news from Leslie Ehm who is a partner in 27 Marbles Training, a company in Toronto. Leslie is also one of our children’s (Rose) sponsors! We met Leslie at Mindcamp last year.

Leslie’s company is hosting a world-wide industry premiere screening of the critically acclaimed, Sundance featured ‘Art and Copy’, the first film documentation of advertising’s creative revolution from the 60′s until today. The screening is on May 25th at the Royal Theatre in Toronto.

Leslie’s company is donating the profits from this screening to ABCD: Art Building Children’s Dreams! How wonderful is that? Thanks so much Leslie and 27 Marbles Training on behalf of the children.

The Rotary Connection

The Rotary Club of Newmarket has been a major supporter of ABCD: Art Building Children’s Dreams over the past two years. Last week, I formally thanked Rotarians in Newmarket on behalf of Frank, Laurie and Joseph with a power point presentation reviewing ABCD: Art Building Children’s Dreams origins and its activities during this recent trip to Tanzania. Rotarians had an opportunity to see images of some of our children in their homes, with their families and at school.

Rotary’s motto “Make Dreams Real” for the children of the world and ABCD: Art Building Children’s Dreams similar vision makes these two like-minded organizations effective partners in addressing the developmental needs of children in some of the poorest countries in the world. We are thrilled to be in discussions with Ken Wall and the Rotary Club of Templestowe in Melbourne, Australia about taking the ABCD: Art Building Children’s Dreams model to children in the Pacific Islands, Timor and Papua New Guinea.

Upcoming Possibilities

ABCD: Art Building Children’s Dreams in Music!

A good friend of mine (who loves music), Graham Fife, has taken on a project to produce a CD of music donated by local recorded musicians! The music will be eclectic, upbeat and professional. Graham is also planning to have one session for all the contributing musicians to get together to jam on a recording with an African theme, and he hopes to make a video of the recording session.

All proceeds from the sale of the CD and Video will go to the cause. How exciting is that! If you want to get involved please contact me through the ABCD: Art Building Children’s Dreams email.

ABCD: Art Building Children’s Dreams Up Mount Kilimanjaro!

Another good friend of mine, Peter Hurson, who came on the trip to Tanzania with the group this January, is planning a fundraising climb to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro! The possible timing for the climb is 2010 or 2011. Details are still being worked on for this ambitious adventure. Contact me through ABCD: Art Building Children’s Dreams email if you would like more information.

Varley Art Gallery

My friend and fellow artist Deborah Colvin has an art exhibition on display right now at the Varley Art Gallery of Markham.

Deb kindly offered me the opportunity to speak about ABCD: Art Building Children’s Dreams to guests who came to her artist’s talk and workshop on March 1, and she very generously donated her artist’s fee to our cause.

Deb’s show is called The Possibility Suite and explores the concept of making a choice from a creative visual standpoint. From a wider viewpoint it speaks about possibilities and choices we all have in our lives.

Both Deb and I saw the connection of her exhibition’s focus as a good one with ABCD: Art Building Children’s Dreams because through our work using education and art, we are hoping to widen the possibilities and choices for our children in Tanzania. Thanks so much to Deb and the Varley Art Gallery for this opportunity.

Pierre Elliott Trudeau School

This post is a bit late as we are waiting for some press coverage of the ceremonial thank you from ABCD: Art Building Children’s Dreams to some students at Pierre Elliott Trudeau High School in Markham. We can’t wait though, we’re thrilled to announce on our blog another very successful school fundraising campaign which finished just before we left for Africa.

Frank made classroom presentations at PET High School and this resulted in a fundraising campaign led by 4 senior students: Shirley Hang, Sylvia Yang, Kassandra Lau and Sarah Vuu. As part of their Global Outreach Program in their Geography course, these 4 girls did home room visits for pocket change donations and whole school PA announcements, set up an information table in the school foyer and collected over $1300 in donations!

This team of students was incredibly organized and passionate about the cause. They did an amazing job and we have to thank them publicly on our blog. THANKS GIRLS!
