The vision of ABCD: Art Building Children’s Dreams is a world where vulnerable children can achieve their dreams. We are a Canadian charity that raises funds to help children in rural Tanzania complete their education.
What a wonderful evening October 23 was! Despite the heavy rain, we had almost 150 guests come out to Madsen’s Greenhouse Banquet in Newmarket for dinner, silent auction and entertainment. There’s so many people to thank for the success of this event that it’s impossible to know where to start…so I’ll just extend a huge thank you to all involved. All of the guests enjoyed the music of Cassava Latin Band and Joe Crone. The dinner was excellent and the venue with the abundance of plants, flowers, water features and stonework provided a beautiful and very fitting setting for ABCD: Art Building Children’s Dreams first event of this nature. Here are photos of the event and some folks who were there. Just click to enlarge. Enjoy!
Ken Wall, Rotarian from Melbourne, Australia whom we met last year at Mindcamp, has made ABCD: Art Building Children’s Dreams (Oz) a reality!
Ken uses our organization here in Canada as a model, and with the support of his Rotary club, is raising funds for 13 children in need of help on the island of Fiji. The children there are making art, and it is being used for fundraising to assist them and their school.
Ken is also a very imaginative children’s storyteller. He has begun writing down the stories he used to tell his children about the adventures of Thribletts. Thribletts are tiny woolly characters who live in the balls of wool sticking to your wool sweaters! Each of these characters has a different personality and they get up to all kinds of fun and misadventures.
Ken has printed the first of these stories and called it Thribletts in the Wash. It’s illustrated by our friend, Jim Ridge, a wonderful artist and another loyal ABCD: Art Building Children’s Dreams supporter here in Canada. Ken is selling this first storybook to raise funds in Australia, and he has kindly donated 100 copies, signed by both him and Jim for us to sell here! Thanks so much Ken and Jim.
Just email us if you would like to receive an autographed copy, for only $10, of this wonderful children’s storybook.
Every Thursday from 3 pm to 7 pm my son Adam and his partner Blythe bring their jars of organic preserves, pickles, jams, veggies to the Organic Farmer’s Market at Dufferin Grove Park in the west end of Toronto.
They sell these delicious home-made products, made with veggies they have grown themselves, as part of their new business called Growing Spaces in which they create edible landscapes within the city.
One dollar of every jar they sell goes to ABCD: Art Building Children’s Dreams. Thanks guys!
We are very happy to have a wonderful new video about ABCD: Art Building Children’s Dreams, now ready for showing at presentations to schools, conferences, and other events.
It was created by Thomas Lin and is a beautiful montage of children’s faces and art with lovely scenes of the Tanzanian landscape. The sound track is a song called I Wish My Friend, written and sung by another good friend, Joe Crone. It is a perfect fit for the video. Much thanks to Thomas for his creative work and to Joe for the song.
ABCD: Art Building Children’s Dreams now has a CD of wonderful original music with which we can raise more funds for the children. It’s called NYIMBO ZA WATOTO (Songs for the Children).
The coordination of the massive effort to do this work was done by a good friend of mine, Graham Fife, a music lover and generous soul.
Musicians/songwriters were found who graciously agreed to donate a song or two. Colin Macdonald, (Colin Macdonald Design) another good friend (and my oldest former student!) came on board to do the great artwork and design. Mastering of the CD was done by Sam Reid of Slip One Digital. He’s a member of Glass Tiger.
It’s an exciting eclectic mix of styles of music ranging from ballads, to klesmer/reggae, to indie vocals, to hot latin beats, to electronic instrumental rhythms, to African folk sung by children.
Inside the case is a wonderful booklet which contains all the lyrics of the songs, photos of all the children and a thumbnail photo of an artwork by each of them. The booklet itself is a treasure!
We are launching the CD at Arts and Hearts for the Children of Kilimanjaro, our fundraising dinner and silent auction, on Oct. 23.If you’re reading this and would like a copy just contact us via email.
To give you an idea of how the funds can be used: the sale price of $20 pays for school lunches for a child for ONE YEAR!
