Recycling Lights for Learning

Andrew, Mark and Colin extract solar reading light components

Volunteer students from Banting Memorial Secondary School disassemble discarded solar garden lights to extract enough components to build 16 solar powered reading lights for ABCDreams students in Tanzania.

On Wednesday Dec. 15, 2010, students earned community service hours at The Blue Frog Cafe (a youth operated cafe) extracting parts to be sent to Africa for local students there to build solar reading lights! While they were at work, they enjoyed the Blue Sky pop and cafe setting and watched the ABCDreams YouTube video and saw a Google satellite map of where the students live in Africa. The volunteer students are grateful to ABCDreams for this volunteer opportunity and asked to come back to do more recycling.

Let us know if you have any discarded LED lights, such as:

* Solar garden or Christmas lights

* Wind up or shake flash lights

* Wind up radios

…and we will arrange to collect these items. Contact Terry Maynard at 705-481-1212.  It would be great to have more components for the January trip to Africa.
