Dinner with ABCD Families

A new initiative this trip is to offer our volunteers the chance to visit ABCD families and sit down to dinner with them. This was an idea excitedly proposed by local families themselves, who are grateful for the support which ABCD has provided to them over the years in funding education costs for their children.

This is a generous and warm-hearted invitation, which we could not refuse! Our first dinner was at the home of mama Beatrice whose son Amani has now completed Form 4 (Grade 12) and is now waiting for his government exam results. We were graciously welcomed into the family shamba (farmyard) and treated to a delicious dinner of rice, fried potatoes, and mchicha (spinach-like veg) followed by watermelon and pineapple. We all could not believe how fresh all the food tasted having just come out of the earth.

After dinner we had a lot of fun and laughter with the children, including neighbouring children, with songs and games such as ‘head and shoulders, knees and toes’, the hokey pokey and ‘simon says’.
